More than 24,000 food packages were prepared by Auckland Council catering staff and distributed to the city’s homeless and vulnerably housed people during the COVID-19 lockdown.

The meals were prepared at council facilities and delivered to the Auckland City Mission for distribution.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff said he’s proud that the council was able to help those in need.

“Auckland City Mission had to redeploy some staff during the early stages of the lockdown so came to us for help,” he said.

“Our staff were keen to help, preparing meals at council facilities and delivering them to the Mission for distribution. Around 20 council staff worked in rotation to make up 400 meals a day, seven days a week at the start of the response.

“I’m extremely proud of how enthusiastic they were about using the time they had because of lockdown to help vulnerable members of our community.”

Auckland City Mission’s Chief Executive Chris Farrelly said a total of 24,400 food packs were given out since 24 March.

“This has been an extraordinary service of partnership between the council and the Auckland City Mission,” Chris said.

“We are proud of our council and acknowledge with gratitude the very significant way you stood with us during our most challenging days. 

“COVID-19 has shone a light on the best of us and we are very grateful for the best that emerged from the council.”

Each individual takeaway food package contained enough nutritious and filling food to last one person for a day.
