Wildlife Selfie Safari

Don a pith helmet and binoculars, and join our very enthusiastic explorer as we track down some wildlife in the Museum. Don’t worry, our wild animals are all stuffed so you’ll be quite safe.

Complete each mission on this actor-led tour, with fun games and activities for children and caregivers to complete together. And don’t forget to take a selfie with each specimen to prove you did it, because if you didn’t take a photo, it didn’t happen.

LIVE at the Museum: A Night of Opera

Join us to for an intimate experience with NZ Opera’s talented artists in Auckland Museum’s stunning Grand Foyer. With performances from international opera star Simon O’Neill (Tenor), Kristin Darragh (Mezzo-Soprano), Natasha Wilson (Soprano), Edward Laurenson (Baritone), accompanied by Pianist David Kelly on the Fazioli piano.  

After a successful 2019 season, don’t miss this unforgettable performance where the talents of New Zealand opera greats are matched with the magnificence of the Grand Foyer. One night only.

Wildlife Wednesdays

Come and experience the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition after dark at Wildlife Wednesdays!

Kickstart your evening with a glass of wine and a bite to eat, and socialise in the beautiful Grand Foyer and enjoy the prestigious exhibition, direct from London’s Natural History Museum, without the crowds.

Make a night of it by grabbing a table to enjoy an antipasto platter with friends (available to pre-purchase here), while discussing the fascinating images and breathtaking diversity of the natural world. Dont forget to visit the Museum Shop which will be open during the evening where you can purchase some great Wildlife items celebrating the exhibition or view the beautiful range of New Zealand made artworks, objects and homewares relating to our collections.

This event is FREE and is suitable for adults aged 18 years and over. No pre booked ticket is required to attend this event.

Matariki Paper Star Mural

10AM – 5PM Daily 6 – 20 JULY, outside Weird & Wonderful
FREE WITH MUSEUM ENTRY

This Matariki, bring your kids along to make beautiful wishing stars, to form a striking mural outside our Weird & Wonderful gallery. In this free activity, kids will make bright, colourful stars to represent their hopes and dreams for the new year.

As the Museum heads towards a more sustainable future, all the materials used for our Paper Star Mural will be composted, reused or recycled.

Bookings aren’t required. Simply turn up to our activity station, and get making.

Nature Quest
ON UNTIL SUN 16 AUG, 10AM – 5PM
PICK UP TRAIL FROM MUSEUM GRAND FOYER
FREE WITH MUSEUM ENTRY

The Museum is filled with examples of native birds, insects and plants, and with taonga created from native wood.

Through the Nature Quest trail, families can explore the living, natural world surrounding the Museum in the Domain.

Listen out for birdsong, discover who is hiding in the leaf litter, who is making pretty patterns on tree trunks, who is climbing waterfalls and much more.

Complete the trail and email us a wildlife photo from your journey, for a chance to win an awesome nature-lover’s prize pack from the Museum shop.

A must-see, world-class exhibition enjoyed all over the world by nature lovers and photographers, the exhibition illustrates the majesty and vulnerability of life on our planet – from big fin squid to a marmot being ambushed by a Tibetan fox, from army ants to American bison. Whilst inspiring curiosity and wonder, the images also remind us of the fragility of our planet and our responsibility to protect it. This free exhibition is a chance to view these stunning photographs, beautifully illuminated, up close and in person.
