Aucklanders across the region are responding in record numbers to Auckland’s Emergency Budget 2020/2021.
So far, more than 15,000 pieces of feedback have been submitted. This compares to approximately 1200 responses over the same period for the annual budget consultation held earlier this year.
Auckland Mayor Phil Goff encourages everyone to have their say on the Emergency Budget.
“COVID-19 has cut our revenue by $525 million, or about 12 per cent, in the coming year,” he said.
“This means the council needs to cut its spending across the board, with fewer staff, a reduction in services and deferral of some of our big construction projects.
“However, we are working hard to ensure that we maintain the vital services council provides to Aucklanders, and we want to invest as much as we can in construction projects that will stimulate the economy, grow jobs and create assets for Auckland.
“We will also look after those facing serious hardship because of COVID-19 by allowing them to defer their rates.”
Finance & Performance Committee Chair Councillor Desley Simpson continues:
“The COVID-19 crisis has punched a half-billion-dollar hole in the council’s revenue. We are cutting costs wherever possible and finding savings and efficiencies where we can.
“But there will be some trade-offs, and we need Aucklanders to tell us what is important to them and be involved in the decision-making process.”
