Whangārei ratepayers entitled to rates rebates for the 2019-2020 year are reminded that the deadline to apply for the rebate is 30 June.
Revenue Manager Alison Puchaux said 3019 applications had been processed this rating year, most of those last winter, at the beginning of the financial year.
“This is a reminder that some people are entitled to a rebate on their rates because of their income level, the size of their rates bill and the number of dependents in their household.
The Rates Rebate Scheme was established by the government in 1973 to provide a subsidy to low-income homeowners on the cost of their rates.
The scheme was reviewed for the 2019-2020 rating year and the maximum rebate is $640 and the income threshold increased from $25,180 to $25,660. Please note this rates rebate is calculated on your income for the 2018-19 financial year.
When a ratepayer receives the rebate, that sum is subtracted from their annual rates bill.
“There is a bit of processing time involved making sure that everything gets to Central Government by 30 June, so we would like to make sure anyone who has still not applied to do so by 20 June. “
