With more people on the roads since the move to Alert Level 2, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is reminding motorists in Tairāwhiti to drive safely and keep to the speed limits.
Senior Network and Journey Manager Helen Harris says Waka Kotahi is urging motorists to take particular care when driving through work sites.
“We have several worksites across the region and many of our crew members have been working throughout each of the alert levels, doing important work to keep us all safe on the roads.
“We’re asking all motorists to please slow down when passing through our worksites and adhere to the temporary speed restrictions, which are in place to keep everyone safe and to protect the work that is being undertaken at the site.
“We have received reports from our crews that some vehicles, particularly heavy vehicles, have not been keeping to the temporary speed restrictions and putting our crew members and work at risk.
“Our crew members go to work each day expecting to go home safely at the end of it, just like everyone else. Safety is our top priority, but there’s only so much we can do to keep people safe – motorists also need to take responsibility and consider the safety of road workers.”
