Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is urging Hawke’s Bay motorists to take extra care on the roads, especially with more people returning to work and school and visiting friends and family.
“We are also heading into winter, and driving on roads that are exposed to winter weather conditions can be tricky, so all motorists should take extra care, watch their speed and drive to the conditions,” Regional Transport Systems Manager Oliver Postings says.
“Waka Kotahi is focused on improving the safety of our region’s state highway network, with major projects like the State Highway 2 safety improvements programme and the removal of an unsafe passing line on State Highway 51 in Clive.
“We have a comprehensive resealing programme for State Highway 5 between Napier and Tarawera, which is ramping up with just over 50 kilometres of the highway to be resealed over the next six years.
“This work is underway now and will improve safety on the road while we continue to explore possible options for further ways to make the road safer for all motorists.
“As part of that, we have started working with the local councils on a Hawke’s Bay transport study. This study will help us identify issues with the region’s transport network which we will then use to develop a programme of work for the region. We envisage that safety of our roads, including State Highway 5, will feature prominently in the study and any subsequent programme of work.
“One death or serious injury on our roads is one too many and has a massive impact on families and communities. Waka Kotahi is committed to reducing deaths and serious injuries on our roads, but we cannot do it alone,” Mr Postings says.
“We need everyone’s help to keep our roads safe, so please take care and drive safely.”
