Short delay to April Food Price Index

1 May 2020

The April Food Price Index, due to be published on 13 May, has been delayed until 20 May, to incorporate supermarket scanner data, because we are not currently able to survey prices in stores due to COVID-19 measures.

Scanner data scans the barcodes of products at electronic point of sale in stores. It is a growing source of inflation data internationally. Ongoing work is needed to test and embed this new data into our system, to ensure data quality is maintained.
