On 1 April 2020, NorthTec become part of the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (NZIST). This new organisation was formed as part of the Government’s Reform of Vocational Education (RoVE) and brings together all 16 Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) across the country.

The NZIST – formed through legislation introduced by Education Minister Chris Hipkins – is now the parent company for the ITPs, which have become wholly-owned subsidiaries of this organisation. This brings all ITPs together into a collaborative model.

NorthTec is now a limited liability company, Northland Polytechnic Limited, but retains the NorthTec logo and brand.
The previous NorthTec governing Council has been replaced by a new Board, with members appointed by the NZIST. The new Board had its first meeting on 3 April – a historic occasion and held by Zoom due to the pandemic lockdown.

NorthTec Chief Executive, Wayne Jackson, welcomed joining the NZIST as a significantly positive step for NorthTec.
He said: “For the first time, New Zealand’s Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics are coming together as one organisation. While we will continue to operate as NorthTec/Tai Tokerau Wānanga, and our learners will initially not see any changes, in the long term this is a very positive move for NorthTec.

“The Government has confirmed its commitment to tertiary education provision in New Zealand, and its intention to increase support for polytechnics delivering teaching in regions like Northland. The formation of the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology is based on ensuring that learners have equitable access to high quality tertiary education throughout the country.”
