Manurewa youngsters are being urged to go bush – and they won’t even have to leave the suburb.

Auckland Council’s community parks team is hosting a family bush camp at Totara Park.

The camp comes after similar events at other community parks and park ranger Glenn Browne says the support of the Friends of Totara Park group means there will be plenty of fun to be had in a well-supervised environment.

“We have had camps before in partnership with volunteer groups and they have been great in encouraging young families to get involved and to raise awareness about caring for their local park.

“The Friends of Totara Park are a great group of committed locals and this will also be an awesome experience for families who have never been camping before. We’ll have a barbecue dinner, nature walks and environmental activities under the stars.”

The camp will run from noon on Saturday 21 March to noon the next day.

Manurewa Local Board chair Joseph Allan says it’s a great opportunity for more people to experience the great outdoors without having to travel far from home.

“Totara Park is a stunning place with magnificent trees and walks and the Friends group does a terrific job in helping look after a park that is one of the jewels in our crown.”

There is a small koha for the Friends of Totara Park payable for each tent site, which can take two or three-person tents only. Organisers even have some tents available for families without their own.

The event is limited to 50 people and bookings are essential. No pets, smoking or alcohol allowed, and all children must be accompanied by an adult.
