A new school boat for the children of Fakaofo atoll, Tokelau, has been built in Christchurch and will be blessed and formally launched by the Minister of Broadcasting, Communication and Digital Media before it is sent to Tokelau.

The 12.5m vessel has been jointly funded by the Government of Tokelau and New Zealand Aid and its design and construction supported by the Pacific Maritime Safety Programme.

Members of the New Zealand Tokelauan community will also be in attendance, along with representatives of Maritime NZ, MFAT and the boat builders, ICON Custom Boats.

Media are invited to the ceremony at 4pm, followed by an opportunity to go out on the water on the vessel. You are then warmly welcome to join us in some light refreshments at the Maritime Rescue Centre.

Please confirm numbers attending to sophie.hazelhurst@maritimenz.govt.nz.
