The Head Chef at Paris Butter, Nick Honeyman, is to judge Best Fritter award at the eighth Whangarei Fritter Festival on Saturday 28 March at Semenoff Stadium.

“C’est délicieux! is how we describe South African born, Nick Honeyman’s French cuisines with a Kiwi twist,” said Venues and Events Manager Carina de Graaf.

“Owner of Auckland’s Number One restaurants on TripAdvisor, Nick is warm, reflective, precise and honest. He combines knowledge and artistic flair to invent interesting and new, with the very best in fresh and local produce.”

Trained as a chef in Australia, Nick moved to France where he worked at Michelin-starred restaurants, absorbing everything French cuisine and culture-related. Moving to NZ, Nick worked as an executive chef at several high-level restaurants before opening Paris Butter, which has been listed in Metro magazine’s Top 50 Restaurants, and most recently by social blogger Zoe Bowker’s Worlds50best restaurants. He’s also hosted his TV show, The best of New Zealand with Nick Honeyman.

Nick’s job on the day is to taste and judge fritters made by Northland chefs and present the award to the winner on stage prior to Katchafire’s performance. The winner will be awarded the Best Fritter Trophy and a cash prize. The public can also vote for their favourite fritter in the Pak’nSave People’s Choice Award.

Mrs De Graaf said the 2020 Fritter Festival is all about tradition.

“We’re challenging chefs from across Northland to bring us their best traditional, old-school fritter recipes, using ingredients that will really put Northland on a plate. Kia mau ki tō ūkaipō’ (Don’t forget your roots).

“Some really amazing fritters in a wide variety of flavours have been registered with event organisers.”
