Due to strong population growth, there is a significant shortage of indoor court space across the Auckland region. This includes a lack of capacity in Upper Harbour to meet the demand for sports such as basketball.

We have developed an indoor court facility plan to help guide decisions and investment in future indoor sports courts.

We are working together with representatives of indoor sports codes such as badminton, table tennis, basketball, netball, volleyball and futsal to help maximise the use of existing facilities and create new ones to meet future demand.

Proposed new facility for Upper Harbour

Upper Harbour Local Board advocated in 2018 for a new multi-use, indoor sports facility to be included as part of Auckland Council’s 10-year budget process.

Planning is now underway to identify the indoor sport, recreation, physical fitness and wellness activities that could be offered at the proposed new facility.

The proposed facility could cater to a wide variety of indoor sports including:

  • badminton
  • basketball
  • futsal
  • netball
  • volleyball
  • squash
  • indoor cricket
  • other recreational activities.

What we’d like your feedback on

We’d like to hear how you might use at the proposed new four-court, indoor court facility in Upper Harbour and whether we have missed anything in the activities we have identified.

Your feedback will help ensure the new facility is fit-for-purpose and meets the community’s needs.

Click here to have your say online before 11 March 2020.

What happens next

A business case will be presented later this year. We will use the business case to decide whether the proposed facility will go ahead.
