Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises additional resealing work will take place on State Highway 2 between Plummers Point Road and Barrett Road overnight tonight (Thursday 20 February).
A temporary speed limit of 30km/h will be in place following the works, and motorists should expect delays.
This section of SH2 was resealed on Friday night last week but the small stones used, known as sealing chip, are coming loose and need to be replaced.
Bay of Plenty System Manager Rob Campbell says while the Transport Agency has tried to schedule works like these on SH2 between Katikati and Tauranga for Friday nights to minimise disruption to weekday commuter traffic, an uncertain weather forecast for Friday night has made it necessary to undertake the works tonight. It rained not long after completing the reseal overnight on Friday and this has contributed to the need to replace the sealing chip.
“We appreciate delays can be frustrating for motorists but it’s important we make sure the road is safe before we return it to 90km/h.
“Please allow additional time for your journeys between Katikati and Tauranga tomorrow and stick to the temporary speed limit to ensure the safety of all road users and prevent damage to vehicles.
“The Transport Agency thanks motorists for their patience.”
