Getting the right mix of sports codes and recreation activities will be essential for the new indoor court facility being proposed at Huapai Domain.
Rodney Local Board Chair Phelan Pirrie says that the demand for indoor court space has far outstripped supply in the Kumeū-Huapai area.
“We need this facility because the area is growing, and already there is a lack of capacity to meet the demand for indoor sports like basketball and netball.
“This is compounded further by the shortage of indoor court space across the Auckland region.
“It isn’t practical to expect people to travel from Huapai to Albany or Henderson to play sport at a council facility.
“Our sports codes have told us their requirements. Now we need to hear from the wider community about the indoor sport, recreation and wellness activities that could be offered at the new facility.”
The consultation period runs from 10 February – 9 March.

The next steps
As a result of ongoing population growth, there is a shortage of indoor court space across the region, including a lack of capacity in the Kumeū-Huapai area to meet the demand for certain indoor sports, such as basketball and netball.
Engagement with clubs based at Huapai Domain, the Kumeu Racquets Club and local schools took place through a needs assessment in 2016.
A feasibility study looking at the provision of indoor courts in Kumeū and Helensville followed in 2017.
The local board advocated in 2018, as part of Auckland Council’s 10-year budget process, for a new indoor court facility to be built at Huapai Domain.
A business case will be prepared later this year to assist consideration by the council’s Finance and Performance Committee on the project funding and timing.
