Vice-Chancellor Professor Neil Quigley has recently acknowledged new Professors and Associate Professors of the University.

These promotions recognise contributions to research and the achievement of an international reputation in their area of specialisation, as well as outstanding contributions to teaching, research, student supervision and leadership within the University.

Promotion to Professor

Professor Alan Hogg, School of Science, Division of Health, Engineering, Computing and Science
Alan is Director of the Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory and undertakes research into past environmental conditions, principally by radiocarbon analysis of ancient Northland swamp kauri. He is also leader of a research group, including PhD students, investigating the characteristics, traditional histories and ages of Waikato wetland Māori pā sites.

Professor Anna Strutt, School of Accounting, Finance and Economics, Division of Management
Anna’s research is primarily in the area of international trade policy modelling and analysis. She teaches papers in economics and global competitiveness, international trade modelling and economic policy.

Professor Belinda Wheaton, Te Huataki Waiora School of Health, Division of Health, Engineering, Computing and Science
Belinda is a cultural sociologist who undertakes research, mostly qualitative in nature in the areas of sport, leisure and wellbeing. She teaches across papers in the Health, Sport, and Human Performance programmes.

Professor Sean Oughton, School of Computing & Mathematical Sciences, Division of Health, Engineering, Computing and Science
Sean’s main research area is turbulence in space physics systems such as the sun’s atmosphere and the solar wind. This turbulence is similar to what you can see at the beach, but because the fluids can carry electric currents, electric and magnetic fields are also important.

Promotion to Associate Professor

Dan researches natural capital and the efficiency of alternative policies designed to address environmental problems. He teaches environmental economics with a focus on the role of economic analysis in solving real world environmental problems.

Associate Professor James Carson, School of Engineering, Division of Health, Engineering, Computing and Science
James’ research interests are based around the application of heat transfer and thermodynamic analysis to vapour compression cycle processes, as well as solar thermal devices. In particular, he has devoted a large part of his efforts to the study of thermal properties measurement and modelling.

Associate Professor Matt Driller, Te Huataki Waiora School of Health, Division of Health, Engineering, Computing and Science
Matt’s main area of expertise is in sports physiology and the majority of his research focuses on the area of fatigue, recovery and sleep in elite athletes.

Associate Professor Matthew Luckie, School of Computing & Mathematical Sciences, Division of Health, Engineering, Computing and Science
Matthew’s general research and teaching area is computer networks. His research focus is measurement and analysis of Internet topology, routing, security and performance.
