The Mountain Bike Club’s carpark and tracks running through the bush near Abbey Caves Road were destroyed by fire. Club members and Council staff are to meet to discuss how to get the tracks back in order for the summer.

Council’s Parks and Recreation Manager Sue Hodge said the tracks wove through bush that was regenerating after a pine harvest.

“We were very lucky that the wind was blowing away from the city so the flames did not spread into the main bush reserves.

“We had been planning to extend the car parking facilities and create a link track to Abbey Caves with Tourism Infrastructure Funds where the fire happened, so repairs and new tracks will be worked around this design.”
