Maunu Cemetery has just gained a great new group of friends and people who are interested are invited to join it – the “Friends of Maunu Cemetery” (FoMC).

The community led project, guided and supervised by the Cemetery team, will plant, weed and then maintain the void spaces (around the headstones where mowing can’t be done) within the Old Portion of Maunu Cemetery.

The inspiration comes from a successful project that saw one of the cemeteries in Taranaki become a tourist draw-card following the efforts of keen volunteers and cemetery staff.

Senior Cemetery Operator Hayden Parr said the benefits of the project would be to:

  • Beautify the area, making it a more welcoming space

  • Create a community project that anyone can be involved in

  • Work at any time (during daylight hours), either in group working bees or when individuals have spare time

  • Enable the Cemetery team to avoid using chemical spray in these areas.

Everyone interested in joining the Friends of Maunu Cemetery is invited to contact the cemetery:
