Nominations close in two weeks

While there have been several informal announcements from people intending to run for Council or Mayor this year, as these pages went to print no official nomination forms had been received according to Council’s election staff.

“In past years people have often left handing in the final paperwork until very close to deadline. I imagine it is because they are getting a feel for people’s reactions to their informal announcements, and then taking the time to make sure every detail of their application is in order,” said Council’s Democracy Team Leader Nicolene Pestana.

“Our candidates handbook is available online or at our offices for anyone wanting to double check what to do, what being a councillor or mayor involves, hours, pay, advice about publicity and a raft of other information. Just go to the Northland Local Elections website (link below).

“There is also one more candidate information evening before nominations close, at 5.30pm at Hikurangi Friendship House on Thursday 8 August.
