Auckland Council’s corporate headquarters Te Wharau o Tāmaki Auckland House is showing its rainbow heart for Pride.

The council’s Head of Diversity and Inclusion Deborah James says the council’s ‘Love Auckland, Love Rainbow’ heart will be projected onto the 29-storey building on Albert Street for a week.

“We’re joining other landmark buildings around Auckland, and of course the Auckland Harbour Bridge, in lighting up for Pride and to show our support for Auckland’s LGBTIQ+ communities.

“Not only are we supporting a range of events during the festival – from our Proud Centres to sponsoring the Big Gay Out, we are very proud of becoming the first council in New Zealand to receive the Rainbow Tick.

“As one of the region’s largest employers, we are committed to supporting and celebrating our LGBTIQ+ staff and to engaging with Rainbow Aucklanders and our Rainbow Advisory Panel,” says Ms James.

The rainbow heart will be projected onto Te Wharau o Tāmaki using a stencil-carrying gobo camera housed on the roof of a neighbouring council building. The projection will come on in the early evening and run until midnight, with the light show finishing on Saturday 15 February.

The cost of this initiative is $3,150 which includes equipment hire and installation, and development of the rainbow stencil.
