An easy way for the Government to avoid the political pain of pre-Christmas strikes at Air New Zealand would be to sell its stake in the company, says the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union.Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director Jordan Williams says “It is very clear that the unions are using Christmas time strikes to ratchet up pressure on the Government as majority shareholder of the airline. If the Government were to sell its stake in Air New Zealand, it could completely extricate itself from any political fallout.”“Normally the benefits of privatisation are limited to improved productivity, higher wages, stronger and more consistent dividend pay-outs, and an opportunity to reduce Government debt. But with a labour relations crisis on the cards, selling the Government’s stake in Air New Zealand would also have other benefits and fend off these strikes. The Government should proceed with immediate sale.”ENDS
