Auckland Rose Society will feature at Waitematā Local Board’s upcoming Parnell Festival of Roses. The society, whose mission is ‘to implant the rose in the hearts and gardens of the people’, has been meeting in Auckland since 1945.

Board member Richard Northey says, “It’s very fitting that we’ll have the Auckland Rose Society at what is one of Waitematā’s flagship events, Parnell Festival of Roses. The Society celebrates the world’s favourite flower and our festival is a favourite in Waitematā.”

“My favourite part of Parnell Festival of Roses are the rose beds themselves. The team of gardeners at the Parnell Rose Gardens do a wonderful job to have the beds ready for the festival,” says Jannene Alexander, Auckland Rose Society secretary.

“I love watching people look at the roses, smell the blooms and take photographs of their favourite blooms.”

Mrs Alexander says the Society’s stall will have cuttings of perennial plants that grow well alongside roses for sale and members will be available to answer questions from the public about rose growing and care.

They will also have copies of the New Zealand Rose Society 2019 calendar for sale.

“This calendar is very special as all the beautiful photos of roses have been taken by our own members. The calendar also includes rose growing hints and tips,” says Alexander.

Auckland Rose Society meets monthly at the Auckland Horticultural Council Complex and welcomes newcomers to join them
