The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) today announced the Call for Proposals to the 2019 round of the Endeavour Fund, New Zealand’s largest contestable research and science fund.

“Approximately $250 million in funding will be available for research projects looking to improve New Zealand’s environmental integrity and sustainability, future economic performance, and societal strength,” says Dr Prue Williams, General Manager Science System, Investment and Performance. Funding is available through two mechanisms, Smart Ideas and Research Programmes.

Smart Ideas funding is for promising, innovative research ideas to enable refresh and diversity in the science portfolio. Applicants can request between $0.4 million to $1 million over the term. Research Programmes funding is for ambitious, well-defined research ideas with credible potential to positively transform New Zealand’s future in areas of future value, growth or critical need. Applicants can request $0.5 million or more per year of funding.

“Over the next few weeks, we’ll hold roadshows across the country, where we’ll outline what funding proposals should cover in their applications and key changes made to the Investment Plan,” says Dr Williams. “If you wish to apply to the Endeavour Fund and want to find out more, please come along to see us at a roadshow.”

An independent panel of experts assesses proposals, before the Science Board makes final funding decisions. Successful proposals will be announced around September 2019.

More information on the Endeavour Fund including how to apply, when to submit applications and how to secure a place to attend the roadshows can be found on our website.
