Massey University has been named as a bronze winner in an international awards programme for an innovative student engagement initiative.
Massey University’s Alumni Relations and Development Team was recognised for designing and distributing decks of playing cards featuring study and life advice from Massey alumni to first year students by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education as part of their annual Circle of Excellence awards programme.
The initiative, which was spearheaded by development consultant Kelly Weaver and alumni relations manager Cassie Rowe, aimed to imbue a sense of history among students and remind them that they were joining a family of past Massey students. The cards featured advice collected from more than 2000 alumni during the University’s annual phone appeal.
“It was a novel way to inspire students and connect them with our growing community of Massey alumni. Featuring the real names and graduating year of the quoted alumni reinforced the concept that this was real advice from one generation of Massey students to the next, making the advice more meaningful” says Ms Weaver.
More than 4000 decks of playing cards were distributed to students across all three campuses.
This year’s Circle of Excellence awards programme saw more than 675 higher education institutions, independent schools and not-for-profits worldwide submit more than 3200 entries for consideration across nearly 100 categories.
The Council for Advancement and Support of Education is one of the largest international associations of education institutions, serving more than 3700 universities, colleges, schools and related organizations in more than 80 countries. It is the leading resource for professional development, information and standards in the fields of education fundraising, communications, marketing and alumni relations.
