Brave cops win awards for outstanding work in Porirua at Wellington District Award Ceremony tomorrow

Twenty eight police staff will be recognised for their achievements at the Wellington District Awards Ceremony being held at the Te Rauparaha Arena Porirua tomorrow 14 June.

The awards ceremony will include the presentation of Long Service and Good Conduct medals (14, 21, 28, and 35 years), as well as District Commander’s Commendations to staff from Kapiti-Mana, Wairarapa, Hutt Valley and Wellington.

Some of the commendations being presented are in relation to the courageous actions of Wellington District staff involved in the tragic events in Porirua on 22nd April 2016 when an officer was injured and a police dog killed as they executed a warrant.

The event this day resulted in a siege situation which lasted over a 24-hour period and was traumatic for everyone involved. It is appropriate that the awards are presented in Porirua tomorrow.

The ceremony will be attended by Mayor of Porirua Mike Tana, Commissioner Mike Bush and Wellington District Commander Superintendent Sam Hoyle.

Media are invited to attend the ceremony at 2.00pm.

Media who are intending to come are asked to email Jillian.Reid@police.govt.nz and should arrive by 1.45pm at the foyer at Te Rauparaha Arena Porirua.
