Council’s animal control team is encouraging people to consider adopting a dog from Council’s animal shelter when looking for a new family member.

Around 500 shelter dogs of all shapes, sizes, breeds, ages and temperaments come into the shelter each year. Many will suit all kinds of families and households.

“Sadly, plenty of great dogs are just not claimed by their owners.  They and other dogs that pass temperament tests and health checks would be perfect for a new forever home,” said Bylaws Enforcement Coordinator Rochelle Deane.

The SPCA ‘temperament test’ makes sure dogs are suitable for adoption. All dogs that go to new homes are de-sexed, micro-chipped and vaccinated. All potential new homes are also inspected to ensure they are suitable.

“Our team at Armourguard loves working with the SPCA to rehome the suitable dogs. That part of the job is a real boost for them, because it is uplifting to see dogs that really deserve a second chance finding good homes.”

Rochelle said all adoptees are de-sexed, microchipped and vaccinated. Male dogs cost $200 and $250 for females (they cost more to de-sex). Registration costs will change throughout the year.

If you are interested in adopting a dog from the shelter, phone 09 438 7513 to make an appointment to view.

Remember a dog is for life and if you adopt a puppy it will be yours for 10-15 years.
