Fraud Awareness Week is a weeklong cross-government initiative aimed to get people talking about scams.

New Zealanders fall victim to scams every day, as scammers come up with new and sophisticated methods to trick consumers into handing over their money or personal information.

Data from NetSafe shows that in 2016 more than 7,000 New Zealanders reported a scam to the organisation, with more than $11.7 million lost to scammers. The average loss exceeded $10,000 while the highest loss reached $2 million, with the most common reason being scammer access to consumer data by pretending to fix a victim’s computer remotely.

These statistics are worrying, and has led the Interagency Fraud Working Group to focus Fraud Awareness Week 2017 on how to recognise a scam, especially new forms of scams targeting the use of digital devices or online accounts.

A range of information materials will be available that remind consumers about checking for red flags, such as unexpected communication, an offer that is too good to be true, or contact details that don’t appear to be legitimate.

Tips such as be suspicious and do your homework before taking any action will also help consumers to recognise a scam.
