Headline: Well, THAT happened: David Clendon reflects on 2016
The end of the year! 2016 has been…a mixed bag – Trump-ism, losing Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen et al, and the creeping malaise of a tired government. Green Party MP David Clendon shares his year.
My highlight of 2016
By giving my miserly side full rein, I managed to eke out funds to make a long hoped-for visit to the UK, Norway and Finland to look at their justice systems, and particularly prisons. What I saw in the latter two countries reassured me that it is worth continuing to fight for a humane, healing approach to dealing with offenders. It can be done, it would make our communities safer, and we should be doing it!
My lowlight of 2016
I was less encouraged watching the government determinedly dragging its feet all year, refusing to acknowledge the opportunities that exist in managing the transition to a resilient, low-carbon economy. Fortunately, the brighter lights in the business community are not waiting for that leadership, they are just getting on with it while hoping for a change to a government that will get on board the (electric) train to a sustainable economic future!

My holiday spot
For the next few weeks, I’ll be enjoying a ‘staycation’ holidaying in the Bay of Islands, one of the most beautiful parts of our country, where I’m lucky enough to live. Our new two-person kayak will be getting put to good use, and I plan to get re-acquainted with some of our less travelled roads aboard one or other of my motorcycles. In my more industrious moments, I’ll be wielding a brush to freshen up some of the paintwork around the house, and of course making sure that the young fruit trees and natives we planted this year are kept well fed and watered through those long, hot summer days!
