Headline: Update on Petone Wharf closure

In a briefing to Council this week, Council officers and consultants suggested that up to half of the outer head (the part of the Wharf that is at the farthest end from the land) may need to be either replaced or removed in the near future. They also raised the possibility of replacing the entire Wharf.

Regular maintenance work was planned for this summer but additional damage was caused by the quake. Recovery Manager Kim Kelly says, “The $140,000 that was budgeted to repair the wharf is now not enough to repair the wharf to the standard that it would be safe for public use”.

She reminds the public that their safety is Hutt City Councils’ greatest concern and it is likely that the future of all of Lower Hutt’s four wharves will be more widely consulted on as part of the 2017/18 Annual Plan.
