Headline: Kaipara Accountability Pushed Aside Yet Again
The government has again ignored Kaipara ratepayers, already burdened with heavy debt, by failing to thoroughly investigate issues before reappointing council commissioners, says New Zealand First.
“These are the commissioners who failed to take action against Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner Ltd over their involvement in the Mangawhai Wastewater Scheme for the cost blowout of tens of millions of dollars,” says Member for Northland and New Zealand First Leader Rt Hon Winston Peters.
Mr Peters questioned in Parliament today whether the Minister had discussed the company’s involvement at all and whether she gave consideration to the fact that the commission had at all times the power not to be caught by the law on time limitation issues.
“The responses from the Associate Minister of Local Government Louise Upston were unsatisfactory.
“There is no defence for the government’s failure to investigate fully the blowout in costs and denying yet again the company and the council’s accountability to ratepayers.
“It is clear the government has no intention of taking responsibility.
“The Minister even failed to consult the new member of Parliament for Northland, thus ignoring the voters in the recent by-election who were ‘sending a message’ to her government.”
