Riposte – With Sumner Burstyn: About Us Bio

Sumner Burstyn is an independent documentary film producer, columnist and feature writer based in Auckland. She makes documentary films with her husband, the director and cinematographer Tom Burstyn.

Her recent film, This Way of Life was shortlisted for the 2011 Academy Awards, won a jury prize at the Berlin Film Festival, the two top documentary awards in New Zealand and seven international film awards. It has sold to 16 countries. Her book updating the film is published by HarperCollins.

Her previous film One Man, One Cow, One Planet won numerous awards and screened in 18 countries.

Her new film Some Kind of Love is currently in post-production with production partners Screen Siren in Canada.

Sumner has previously worked as a columnist, winning Best Columnist of the Year award at the 2004 Qantas Awards. She established the late great Auckland magazine store Magazzino in the late 80’s, has four daughters and four grandchildren, and a passion for environmental and social justice issues.

(And yes she’s the same Sumner Burstyn who made an unwise comment about a fallen NZ soldier and became the focus of a hate campaign orchestrated by members of the NZ Army.)
