In recent weeks Council has held five public meetings to discuss the whether or not changes need to be made to the way it calculates and apportions its rates from 2018 to 2028.

“The rates for this coming year are forecast to be adopted at the June Council meeting, so these meetings have not been about them, they have been about how we do things in the next 10 years,” said Finance Committee Chairperson Shelley Deeming.

“The review aims to ensure Council is being is as fair as it can be for our ratepayers. The feedback we have received from the public over the years, and at these meetings, has raised points we think need to be considered seriously, hence the review.”

“It is a very important discussion because more than half the funding we get to run the District comes from rates.  These rates are paid by property owners in the District so Council wants to make sure it is being done in a fair and appropriate way,” she said.

“The information can be viewed on our Rates Structure Review page on our website.

The briefing papers that outline the review are also available at Council libraries and customer service centres in Forum North and you can still drop us an email to let us know your thoughts at mailroom@wdc.govt.nz.

“If, following the review, changes are recommended to our system, these will be consulted on during the formal consultation on the 2018-2028 Long Term Plan,” Councillor Deeming said.
