Headline: Options for Peka Peka to Ōtaki cycleway to be explored
The NZ Transport Agency has confirmed that it is bringing forward its planning for cycling facilities for Peka Peka through to Ōtaki.
“Our original plan was to provide a cycleway as part of the revocation process, where the current State Highway 1 will become a local road,” Neil Walker, Highway Manager, NZ Transport Agency says.
“However we have listened to the recent feedback from the community, and we are now bringing forward our planning to deliver similar cycling and walking facilities to those on the Mackays to Peka Peka expressway. We are also now aiming for the new facilities to be complete at the same time as the Peka Peka to Ōtaki expressway,” Mr Walker says.
“Part of our planning will be looking at the appropriate location of walking and cycling options. We are considering whether they will be on the new section of the expressway, along the current State Highway 1, or a combination of both. Our next step is to talk with the community about options.”
The Transport Agency is in discussion with Kāpiti Coast District Council, and plans to engage with the community on options around May this year.
“We have been pleased with the community’s positive reaction to the new recreational pathways as part of the Mackays to Peka Peka expressway. Whatever the final design for the Peka Peka to Ōtaki section, we will make sure that any new facilities will link to the Mackays to Peka Peka cycle, walk and bridleway,” Mr Walker says.
