Headline: World Medical Association celebrates landmark declaration on torture
The World Medical Association (WMA) has celebrated the 40th anniversary of a landmark declaration by the medical profession against physicians’ involvement in torture, and says the celebrations occurred on the eve of the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. WMA President Dr Xavier Deau says the declaration set out clear guidance that “the physician shall not countenance, condone or participate in the practice of torture or other forms of cruel, inhuman or degrading procedures, whatever the offense of which the victim of such procedures is suspected, accused or guilty, and whatever the victim’s beliefs or motives, and in all situations, including armed conflict and civil strife”. The full media release can be read here.
Meanwhile, in another media statement, the WMA is appealing to Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reconsider government legislation before the Knesset which would explicitly allow the force-feeding of detainees on hunger strike: http://www.wma.net/en/40news/20archives/2015/2015_25/index.html.
