Headline: GPJA 475 (Part 2 of 2): Jeff Halper speaking Auckland Thursday Sept 5

Hi All GPJA Newsletter readers.

This is part 2 of #475. Part 1 contained a full “What’s On” in coming months and NZ news and analysis. Because of that I have only a few reminders for this week’s activities and the rest of the newsletter is devoted to international news.

I offer a selection of crtical analysis. People are free to pick and choose what interests them. I have a section focussing on the war in/on Syria of course and why a foreign miltary attack would be a disaster for the world. This week I have also put a number of articles that critically analyse the events in Egypt and the hijacking of a people’s revolt into the imposition of a military dicatorship that may be of interest.

If you have suggestions for events or articles that can be included please email mike.

Mike Treen

‘Towards a just peace for Israel/Palestine’. Dr. Jeff Halper has been a peace and human rights activist for more than three decades. Born in Minnesota in the United States, he participated in the civil rights and anti-Vietnam War movements of the 1960s. Halper immigrated to Israel in 1973 after attending rabbinical school and resisting military service in the Vietnam War. In Israel, Halper taught anthropology at Haifa and Ben-Gurion Universities. His academic research has focused on the history of Jerusalem in the modern era, contemporary Israeli culture, and the Middle East conflict. He is the author of Between Redemption and Revival: The Jewish Yishuv in Jerusalem in the Nineteenth Century. During his mandatory Israeli military service, he refused to bear arms or serve in the occupied Palestinian territories. In 1997, Halper co-founded the Israeli Committee Against Home Demolitions (ICAHD) to challenge and resist the Israeli policy of demolishing Palestinian homes.

  • In Steve Ballmer’s 13 years as Microsoft CEO, the company has lost over a third of its market value. Yet Ballmer’s personal stash of Microsoft shares has jumped 56 percent in value since 2000 — to $11.5 billion. This past Friday, Ballmer announced his retirement. Investors delighted to see Ballmer go sent Microsoft’s share price up 7 percent.
  • If the top 1 percent had taken the same percentage of total U.S. income in 2006 as they did in 1980, they would have taken $1 trillion less. (Paul Buchheit, 6 horrifying facts about the rich, Salon, August 28, 2013.)
  • What hard times? America’s five biggest banks, pay consultant Alan Johnson estimates, will shell out $23 billion in 2013 bonuses, the biggest bonus bonanza since the 2008 financial industry meltdown. Whopping bonuses for top bank executives will bring average pay at the five banks, for everyone from clerks to chief execs, to $149,472 per full-timer, “triple the pay of the average American,” notes Fortune magazine.
