5AA Australia: Across The Ditch With Selwyn Manning & Peter Godfrey – Cold-Case Murder + US/NZ Sign Security Pact
5AA Australia: Across The Ditch With Selwyn Manning & Peter Godfrey – Recorded live on 21/06/12. This week Peter and Selwyn discuss how Police have re-started a cold-case murder investigation after on May 19 the skeletal remains of teenage woman Jane Furlong was found after a storm eroded parts of sand dunes at Port Waikato, south of Auckland.
This week a post mortem examination of the skeleton confirmed the remains were Jane’s.
Jane went missing in 1993 the night before she was scheduled to give testimony in the trial of well known businessman Stephen Collie who was later convicted of several rape and assault charges involving sex workers. Collie has consistently denied guilt. Jane was also scheduled to give evidence in a gang related murder case.
Also discussed: New Zealand and the United States have signed a security pact titled the Washington Declaration commiting both nations to closer military cooperation. The two countries fell out in the late 1980s after New Zealand established anti-nuclear laws preventing vessels equipped with nuclear weapons from entering New Zealand’s territorial waters. The ANZUS Alliance (involving Australia, New Zealand and the United States) became defunct. And the United States considered New Zealand as hostile to its security interests.
The law still exists, however over recent years the US has announced that it is no longer a rock in the road preventing the two countries from establishing closer military and security ties.
